FALCON BASKETBALL
Falcons finish with a perfect 9-0 mark!
Jackson, Williams and Banks pace a 48-23 win over Ponchatoula in the
STA Summer League finale.
HAMMOND—The Saint Thomas Basketball Falcons completed their sixth
year of hosting summer league play Monday with a 48-23 win over Ponchatoula.
The win earned Saint Thomas a 9-0 record that included a signature win
over highly regarded Riverside.
“I am very proud of these young men,” said Saint Thomas head
basketball coach Errol Gauff. “Coming

into the summer we had three objectives to
initiate with this team as far playing goes. We have made great progress on two
of the three and the third I put back on me. We do not practice in the summer.
We just play games and so concepts that require more teaching will not progress
as fast.”
The Falcons got double-digit performances from three different
players as Zay Jackson led with 11 points and David Williams and Tre’lun Banks each
added 10 apiece. “Sharing the ball and looking for the player with the best shot
is something we have gotten better at,” explained Gaff. “From starting back in
late May through June, I can see where we have improved in certain areas and
where we still need to work to correct some things.”
Saint Thomas opened the contest with a 10-0 run as Jackson
dropped in a short jumper at the 14:59 mark. The Green Wave responded closing the
gap to within one at 10-9 as Cole Plummes went to work at the three-point line
hitting twice and teammate D.J. Mobley added a third trey.
The Green Wave kept it within four for the rest of the half,
but a lay-up by Steven Wronkoski with 18 seconds left gave the Falcons a 21-16
advantage. Saint Thomas kept the pressure on early in the second stanza running
the score to 29-16. The Falcons would cruise the rest of the way extending their
lead to as much as 44-17 on a jumper by Banks at the 6:35 mark.
Several area teams competed in the league this year including
Amite, Albany, Ponchatoula, Springfield, and Sumner. Coming from further out
East Saint John, Saint Helena, and Riverside were also represented.
Coach Gauff believes the league play helps him in his preparation
for official practice which begins in the fall.
“The league play obviously gives all the coaches the
opportunity to observe strengths and weaknesses of players in live game action,”
said Gauff. “I make a lot of notes during the month of July in terms of what I
observed during league play. When practice starts again in the fall, I want to
make sure what a guy is doing well he does more of it and also be able
to focus on the key areas where we need more teaching and practice.”
While Coach Gauff expressed the need for a strong work
ethic, he also believes that you have to allow teenagers some time off in the summer.
“I am very proud of the commitment and work our young men do. The guys start
in May and work through June and after that I think you have to let teenagers
be teenagers and take a break and enjoy some time off. We as coaches need
to step away as well and refresh.”
