SAINT THOMAS HOOPS
Falcons play big time “D” to earn first round win!
Saint Thomas defeats the Bunkie Panthers 72-31 in Bi-District Playoff. The Falcons will play Holy Savior Menard in the next round.
HAMMOND—The Saint Thomas Falcons used an aggressive defense to shutdown the
visiting Bunkie Panthers en route to scoring a 72-31`first round playoff win in hoops
action Tuesday night. The Falcons limited the Panthers to single digits in scoring
through the first three periods and gave up only 15 points in the final period.
“It had been a while since we last played and I was a little concerned about how we
might come out, but our young guys did such a great job of preparing our starters at the last
practice by really challenging them and it really showed tonight,” said Saint Thomas head
coach Errol Gauff. “We were aggressive and working hard on defense for every loose ball
right from the start.”
Saint Thomas opened the contest with a 10-2 run cashing in a trio of turnovers
created by their pressure defense. Junior Cody Addison tossed in a short jumper with six seconds
remaining in the period to give the Falcons their biggest margin at 17-4 in the first stanza.
“Everyone always likes to talk about offense and our guys did a great job of
hitting their shots tonight, but our defense set the pace for us,” said Gauff. “I was pleased with
the effort of all our guys. They took nothing for granted and played every possession hard.”
The Falcons continued the furious defensive pace in the second period limiting
the Panthers to just six points while tossing in 16 to take a 33-12 advantage at the half. Senior Steven
Wronkoski, who collected six first half rebounds, led Saint Thomas with 13 first half point and finished
with 17 to lead all scorers.
“Steven did a good job of being aggressive and showing leadership working
hard on defense for us and working with his teammates to create good shots,” added Gauff.
Saint Thomas left nothing in the locker room after halftime saving their best
production for the third period as they out-gunned Bunkie 21-4 to take a 54-16 lead after three stanzas
of play. Senior DJ Cannon tossed in a trey to start the period and scored seven points, while senior
David Williams and Addison each nailed a pair of buckets in the period.
The Falcons cruised in the final period as the Sixth-Man Squad took over and
out-scored Bunkie 18-15 ending the rout. Christian Boutwell clocked some quality minutes
collecting nine points in the fourth, while James Cox had four and Hunter Gebbia added
three more for the winners.
Addison finished with 11, while Cannon had 11 for Saint Thomas. Bunkie’s DeterrianWilliams led the Panthers with 10.
