Monday afternoon as the two parish schools closed out spring football drills with a spirited controlled scrimmage hosted by the Falcons. St. Thomas, the defending District 9-2A Champs, showcased their senior laden roster by scoring six touchdowns while holding Sumnerto just two. The Falcons rolled up an unofficial 411 yards of offense while limiting the Cowboys to 185. St. Thomas also collected a pair of turnovers with a fumble recovery and an interception.
“This group of seniors is very tight and we preach to them all the time about stepping up and being leaders,” said St. Thomas head coach John White. “We hope that this group will determine to work together and develop into the kind of young men that can push this team to reach its goals.”
The Cowboys are looking to improve on a 2-8 finish last season and Sumner head football coach Mark Catalanotto reinstalled his version of the Wing T during spring drills in hopes of sparking a turnaround. “We spent the spring reinstalling our version of the Wing T. We needed to be in better shape and that hurt us some on defense. We worked on teaching our kids both sides of the ball and in the process neglected our defense some and it showed in the scrimmage today.”
The Falcons scored three of their touchdowns through the air with senior starter Raymone Andrews passing for a 39-yard touchdown to senior Zack Reed and a 41-yard strike to senior Ryan Gambel. Andrews also rushed for a pair of scores on runs of seven and two yards. Junior backup Ethan Bleakley tossed an 11-yard pass to fellow junior Trey Marino.
“Offensively I feel real good especially with regards to our passing game. We are much further along than I

thought we would be. We have some new people on our offense and they contributed,” said White. “Defensively we swarmed to the ball well and did not give up many big plays. Our tackling was not solid at times, but that is going to happen in the spring. We have just got to get better and keep working hard to improve.”
Sumner’s Tyrone Norman completed a 16-yard pass to Jordan Giffin for the first of the Cowboys two scores. David Walker dashed seven yards to pay dirt for Sumner’s second touchdown.
“Offensively we were able to move the ball and make plays, but we still need to work on finishing drives and sustaining our momentum. To win football game you have to able to drive the distance and score. We are not there yet, but we made some strides and the kids are getting more comfortable with the new scheme,” said Catalanotto.
Sophomore Brent Crump and senior Jarred Morales collected turnovers for St. Thomas with a fumble recovery and interception respectively.
